DESCRIPTION

Moonraker was custom built in New Zealand for unlimited worldwide cruising. The builder Kelly Archer was chosen for his international reputation for high quality yachts, and because of his policy of building only one yacht at a time, providing total focus on one project. The yacht was built to Lloyds hull construction certificate requirements HCC.

The yacht was designed to go off the well worn cruising paths of easier climates. Sea keeping abilities are well proven in the Van De Stadt pedigree. The pilot house provides a sheltered watch keeping position with good visibility around the boat. Construction is aluminum, combining light weight and great strength. Despite its size the yacht is easily handled; the jib and staysail have Harken hydraulic furlers, the mainsail has hydraulic in boom furling by Leisure Furl, and the steering is hydraulic. She is easily sailed and maintained by a small crew, crossing the Pacific in 2007 with just the owner and wife plus two crew, and is set up for single person night watches.

Although the displacement is seventy tons, sailing performance is surprisingly good, thanks to the very tall rig and large, powerful mainsail. Even in light winds of 10-15 knots a boat speed of 6-8 knots is normal and in over 15 knots of wind, 8-9 knots is the average cruising speed, regularly giving 200 mile days when offshore sailing. Motoring is kept to a minimum.

The deep cockpit is safe and dry when sailing, seats six for al fresco dining and is protected by a strong all weather fixed bimini.

The yacht has been equipped to be self sufficient for long periods, with large fuel tanks giving a range of 3,000 miles, a Sea Recovery water maker producing 200 litres per hour and with two large freezers and three refrigerators.

The interior, designed by Andrew Winch, is pleasant, spacious and light. The joinery is beautifully crafted in Anagrea, a light honey coloured wood creating both light and warmth.

The transition from exterior to pilot house to the saloon, gives the feeling of being on a much larger yacht.  The layout is very well done offering a large owner’s cabin and child’s cabin or sea berth aft, with two guest cabins and a two man crew cabin forward, all with en suite shower and heads.  The day heads is also a laundry room. The large and well equipped galley is positioned low in the boat, making it very comfortable to work in at sea. The saloon is light and spacious with the dining area on the port side and a sitting area on the starboard.

There are two options for access to the engine room. For regular checks and maintenance in all areas access is through the water tight door in the control room. For major service work the saloon floor has a hinged door providing full headroom.

In October 2006 a refit was carried out by Hinkley’s R.I. Major work was carried out to improve the cockpit area, including putting seats at the helm, repositioning all engine controls and navigation aids to the helm position, relocating foresail furling buttons to the winches and adding a larger cockpit table with refrigeration.  Most of the electronics were updated and equipment replaced wherever necessary.

Moonraker is in excellent condition and has always been maintained by a professional captain.
